Travel | Journey #02: Landing in Seoul — A Gentle Touch for Your First Step

“The moment you step through the sliding glass doors of Incheon Airport, your Korean story truly begins.”

The beginning of your warm story at Incheon Airport.

You’ve just landed at Incheon International Airport (ICN), a place that consistently redefines the standards of global travel. It’s not just a transportation hub; it’s your first warm embrace from Korea. Instead of feeling lost in a strange place, let’s move with light steps so that your excitement doesn’t turn into tension, just as we planned during our preparation.

Navigating the Gateway Without the Hustle

Incheon Airport is a marvel of design, but its sheer scale can be overwhelming for first-time visitors. To avoid wandering aimlessly, follow this simple path:

  • The Golden Path: After passing through immigration, look for the clear, light-filled signs pointing toward the ‘Airport Railroad (AREX)’.
  • Moving Like a Local: Following these signs is the secret to moving like a local—you won’t have to double back or stop to ask for directions repeatedly.

Lighten Your Hands

Let your heavy suitcases leave you for a while to a safe place! When your hands are light, your body—tired from the flight—becomes lighter, and your journey becomes much easier.

  • Baggage Delivery Service: At the arrival hall (1F), look for counters like ‘TRIP EASY’. Simply show them your hotel reservation, and for a small fee, they will whisk your bags directly to your accommodation. Imagine walking out of the airport with nothing but your handbag, knowing your luggage will be waiting safely in your hotel room.
  • Smart Lockers (T-Locker): If you prefer to keep your bags close but out of sight, use the T-Locker systems found at the airport station and almost every subway station in Seoul. It’s a small convenience that buys you immense freedom.

Your First Destination: The Timeless Elegance of Bukchon

Since your bags are already on their way to the hotel, let’s head straight to Bukchon Hanok Village, where the past and present breathe together in harmony.

A Living Museum in the Heart of Seoul Bukchon has been a residential area for over 600 years. During the Joseon Dynasty, this was the prestigious neighborhood where nobility lived. It is a “living village” where people still reside today, preserving the dignity of Korean tradition.

Visualizing the Journey: A Walk for the Senses

  • The Architecture: Notice the graceful curve of the tiled roofs against the backdrop of Seoul’s modern skyscrapers—a beautiful contrast of time.
  • The Aesthetic of Silence: As you walk through the narrow, stone-walled alleys, you’ll notice a unique sense of order. This “aesthetic of silence” reflects the dignified lifestyle of the scholars who once lived here.
  • A Moment of Peace: Follow the faint scent of wood or traditional tea. Use the small amount of cash we prepared in Journey #01 to step into a quiet courtyard teahouse. As you wrap your hands around a warm cup, you’ll feel the fatigue of your long flight magically melting away.

Respectful Exploration Because Bukchon is a real neighborhood and not just a historical site, we visit with a calm and thoughtful heart. By respecting the privacy of the residents, we become part of the village’s timeless beauty.

“Your first journey to Korea has gently unfolded with these exciting steps in Bukchon. Can you feel the soft flutter of excitement in your heart? But the story of these quiet alleys is just beginning. In our next journey, I’ll take your hand and guide you to the hidden gems tucked away between the Hanoks. See you in Journey #03!”
